LGBTQ+ Pride Month

“You have to go the way your blood beats. If you don’t live the only life you have, you won’t live some other life, you won’t live any life at all.”

James Baldwin – Iconic writer, speaker, and activist

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a time when we recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others) community in the United States and worldwide. It is observed every year in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred in June 1969 and are widely regarded as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to society, to highlight the ongoing struggles and challenges faced by the community, and, more wonderfully, this month is the perfect opportunity to create bridges of understanding, empathy, and community. Members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies can come together to celebrate our diversity of identity and experience and to promote greater understanding and acceptance of all people. It serves as a reminder of the progress made toward LGBTQ+ rights and equality and of the ongoing work that still needs to be done to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month creates valuable space and opportunity in several ways:

  • Visibility and Awareness: Pride Month raises awareness of the LGBTQ+ community and promotes greater visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals and issues. This increased visibility can help to break down stereotypes and stigmas and encourage greater understanding and acceptance.
  • Celebration and Unity: Pride Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to society and to promote unity and solidarity within the community. It’s an opportunity for people to unite, celebrate their identities, and support each other.
  • Advocacy and Activism: Pride Month is also an opportunity to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and to promote social and political change. With over 540 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across state legislatures in 2023 alone, LGBTQ+ individuals and allies can use this time to organize and advocate against discrimination and to maintain equal rights in areas such as marriage, employment, healthcare and housing.
  • History and Legacy: “The first Pride was a riot.” – unknown

Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. By commemorating this event and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, Pride Month helps to recognize the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before and to honor their legacy.

Being an ally during LGBTQ+ Pride Month means taking action to support and uplift the LGBTQ+ community.

Here are a few ways you can be an ally:

  • Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Read books, watch documentaries, and seek out resources to help you better understand the community.
  • Listen and Show Support: Listen to LGBTQ+ individuals, and show your support by attending events, sharing messages of support on social media, and speaking out against discrimination and hate.
  • Speak Up: Speak out against homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination when you witness them. Use your voice to support LGBTQ+ individuals and to promote acceptance and inclusion.
  • Be an Ally Every Day: Being an ally is not just about showing support during Pride Month; it’s about advocating for the LGBTQ+ community daily. Challenge your own biases and stereotypes, and work to create a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone.

This Pride Month, remember that although we want to celebrate, support, and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, let’s use this month as a reminder that although there has been progress  toward greater equality and acceptance, there is still work to be done to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

By creating more understanding, friendship, and community, we can all walk with more compassion, joy, strength, and PRIDE.
