Simple Summer Projects to Revitalize Your Home

Maybe you’re staying home more often because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s got you thinking, “I really need to do some updating around here.” Don’t be thwarted by the idea of losing weekend after weekend to an endless to-do list. Many top DIY projects can be completed in just a few hours to breathe fresh life into your home.

Consider tackling these simple summer projects that yield big results.

Paint a Room

A can of paint can make a world of difference. If your kitchen is dull, brighten it up. If your bedroom is boring, soften it up. Paint is a cheap way to freshen a room and achieve the mood you want to portray. And there’s almost no learning curve. Check out 2020’s hottest paint colors.

Hang New Lighting

Old, outdated lighting screams “we’ve given up,” and not much is going to hide sad chandeliers and frightful fluorescents. Invest in some nice, quality can lights or recessed lights for the kitchen. Add a geometrical design or a cool bamboo shade in the hallways, and a romantic pendant light in the bedroom. Be sure to choose lights that match the vibe you’re going for, whether it’s rustic, contemporary, industrial or something else.

Tile Your Bathroom

Rip up your old vinyl and lay some tile in your bathroom. Yes, it’s tedious, but you can get a small bathroom completed in a weekend at fraction of the cost of what you would pay someone to do it for you. Tile will immediately update the look of your tired bathroom without breaking your budget.

Add a Kitchen Backsplash

Liven up your kitchen with a mosaic tile, stone, or tin backsplash to make your kitchen look high-end and give it more dimension. You can install it yourself with a few tools. Watch a few tutorial videos to learn how to do it step by step. Measure methodically and take your time. Your kitchen space will be immediately updated as a result.

Install Cabinet Hardware

Don’t have hardware on your cabinet doors? You’re missing a big chance to make them look new and upscale. Find some knobs and handles you like that fit with your décor and add them to every door. Your kitchen will instantly shine with a higher design, more-finished look.

Add a Stone Walkway

If you don’t have a set path to your front door, make one! Buy some steppingstones or bricks, plan out the path you want your walkway to take, and lay them from your driveway to your front steps, or from your front porch to the back gate.  Don’t be afraid to use them in a curved pattern to add even more visual interest. Fill the gaps with sand, gravel, or smaller decorative stones.

Install Solar Lighting

One of our favorite weekend outdoor projects lights up your front yard without increasing your electric bill. Invest in some solar lights and place them on either side of your driveway and along every footpath. Add a few around your mailbox, too. These will add a classy look to your place while minimize tripping hazards.

Plant Flowers

Curb appeal is key to making your home look lovely. Bunches of blooms go a long way toward accomplishing that goal without spending a bundle. Visit a nursery and talk to them about how much sun your front yard gets, and purchase flowers that will thrive in that environment. Plant them under your windows, around your trees, and definitely around your mailbox (see below). Get some colorful pots and add greenery and blooms to spice up your porch.

Update Your Mailbox

One of the most important weekend outdoor projects you can complete is your mailbox. It’s the first thing people see when they drive up! Invest some money in a sturdy, attractive box and make sure the poll is strong and straight. Add your house numbers, and plant some flowers around your mailbox for added appeal.

Here are some other cool ways to upgrade your mailbox.
