The Home Modifications and Ramp Program Benefits Disabled Tennessee Residents

The Home Modifications and Ramps Program is a popular, state-run venture created to help disabled individuals access and move around their homes with ease. Read on to get to know what the program offers and how you can benefit from it.

Who Qualifies for Help?

If you are disabled, you qualify for assistance.

If you meet Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) income requirements, the program will cover the cost of lumber and other supplies. If your income is too high, you can still benefit from the free labor if you are willing to cover lumber costs yourself.

Renters and homeowners alike can apply to the Home Modifications and Ramps Program. However, renters will need written permission from the landlord to make modifications to the home. A copy of the written permission form will need to be sent with the application.

Unfortunately, the type of ramp used in this program cannot be installed on all types of housing. United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee (UCP), which administers the program in conjunction with the THDA, will send someone to assess the house before construction begins. If needed modifications cannot be made, you may need to look for alternative forms of assistance.

How to Apply

All applications should be submitted to United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee. Along with your application, you will need to provide:

  • A Household Member Income form listing all members of the household and the annual income for each member.
  • Documentary evidence showing your annual income. This can include a Social Security benefits letter, your bank statement, current tax returns, and pay stubs.
  • A Permission for Home Modification form, signed by the homeowner
  • A release form

You can ignore the first two points if you intend to pay for lumber and supplies. Simply note that you will cover these costs on your application form.

What Next?

Unfortunately, there is currently a waiting list for applicants to the THDA/UCP Home Modifications and Ramp Program. However, the good news is that there are other forms of aid available to low-income Tennessee residents via several THDA program. These include:

  • Weatherization Assistance
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
  • Emergency Repair
